Chch’s Labour MPs will ‘benefit’ By Bridget Rutherford and Gabrielle Stuart POLITICAL scientist Bronwyn Hayward is predicting Labour’s Christchurch candidates will benefit at the polls from the party’s crisis. The Canterbury University associate professor said the change in Labour leadership from Andrew Little to Jacinda Ardern would strengthen not weaken Labour as they go into the September 23 general election. “It’s the best thing Labour could have done. They had nothing to lose.” Bronwyn Dr Hayward, Hayward who yesterday was in Wellington for a democracy conference said: “It’s amazing the energy from people who just feel this is a chance for new ideas. I haven’t seen a shift like this since 1984 when Rogernomics came in.” National has been in Government since 2008. Labour started to lose its traditional grip on the city in the 2011 election when National took Christchurch Central. Labour failed to take it back three years later. The party’s support in recent polls dropped to 24 per cent, its lowest in more than 20 years. •Turn to page 6

GAME ON. Just months ago, September’s election looked like being a cliff hanger. The mercurial John Key was gone and there appeared to be a mood for change after National’s lengthy time at the helm. That all changed this week when polls showed Labour nose diving and more crisis with Andrew Little stepping aside. But political scientist Bronwyn Hayward sees it differently. On page 1 today, she says the changes will breathe new life into Labour’s campaign. She might be right. Congratulations to evergreen Chris Johnson, who has just won his second jockey’s premiership. Johnson has had his ups and downs over the years and for a time was out of the saddle. But there has never been any doubt about his riding skills, which is why he is called the Magic Man. Today we look back on his season on page 36, and sports reporter Gordon Findlater previews the weekend’s club rugby league preliminary final. Go the Keas! – Barry Clarke

FLOWERS BLOOMING CONFUSED

This week in history saw a Royal Charter on July 31, 1856, making Christchurch New Zealand’s first city. On August 1, 1929, the Lyttelton Times was re-named Christchurch Times. It later became the Christchurch Star then The Star. On the same day in 1975 severe nor’west gales caused serious damage throughout the city and province. Winds gusted to 172km/h (107mph). There were more than 250 injuries in Canterbury, and many forests were devastated. On August 4, 1878, a severe snowstorm swept over the South Island. On August 4, 1923, the railway to the West Coast was opened. On August 6, 1867, the John Robert Godley statue (right) was unveiled, it was New Zealand’s first public statue.

Roses in bloom and daffodils lining the riverbanks in August? No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks – something unusual is happening at the Botanic Gardens. The normally dormant winter flower beds are bursting with colour, the roses are still blooming, and daffodils feature on the riverbanks. Gardens collection curator David Barwick said because there had been no decent frosts or cold weather, the plants were confused. “They’re either skipping into spring growth early or they never stopped growing at all.”

MANY ARTEFACTS UNEARTHED

More than 100,000 European and Maori artefacts have been dug up around the city since the February 22, 2011, earthquake. Archaeologist Katharine Watson, founder of company Underground Overground Archaeology, said the finds are a rich resource, and have been kept.

In Brief STOLEN VAN VICTIM NAMED The man killed after crashing a stolen vehicle in St Albans was 30-year-old Jeremiah Jason Dick. The van Dick was driving crashed into a ute at the intersection of Cranford St and Innes Rd at about 12.57pm on Tuesday. The van belonged to a contractor who worked for aluminium joinery company Nulook Solutions. A staff member said the van was stolen from a nearby work site minutes before the crash. PASSENGER GRABS WHEEL A passenger in a van involved in a crash on Riccarton Rd had to grab the wheel after the driver had a seizure and hit the accelerator. The vehicle smashed into another vehicle before overturning. The crash happened at about 10.10am and blocked both lanes of traffic on Riccarton Rd with one vehicle ending up on its side. Three people were taken to Christchurch Hospital.

Ben Bloy

By Gabrielle Stuart WOULD YOU pay $10,000 for a dinner with Prime Minister Bill English, or with Winston Peters? Two Cantabrians did last week, for a good cause – to help teenager Maddie Collins get a life-saving kidney transplant in the United States. One was Chesters Plumbing manager Ben Bloy, who paid $10,000 for pre-dinner drinks and dinner at Parliament buildings with Bill English and Selwyn MP Amy Adams. He said Maddie’s story had “touched a chord” for him, as his own daughter was a similar age. But he also wanted the chance to speak with the prime minister about how difficult things had been for small businesses in Christchurch since the earthquakes. He planned to ask Mr English to make more investment in Christchurch, he said. “We need investment in our city. The anchor projects need to get going, because some businesses are really struggling,” he said. He said it was a lot to pay for a dinner, but he said Maddie’s story had inspired him and he wanted to help. “We get caught up with stupid things going on in our lives, our ‘first world problems’ with potholes and things, but here’s someone living with no kidneys,” he said. Another Christchurch man, who did not want to be named, paid $10,000 for a dinner at Parliament with Mr Peters. He was not a NZ First voter, but said he thought Mr Peters would be an “interesting character” to talk with. He said he knew Maddie’s family, and

TRAPPED SAVING CAT A man attempting to rescue a cat from a roof in Woolston ended up needing to call the Fire Service to rescue him. Woolston firefighters were called to Randolph St at about 12.45pm on Tuesday after a man used a fence to get on the roof to rescue a stricken feline, but was unable to get down. “He went up on the roof without a ladder,” a fire communications spokesman said. “Lucky he took his phone with him.” The cat was also rescued.

Max, Bella top dog names By Bridget Rutherford THOUGH MAX is the most popular male dog name in Christchurch, this Max isn’t actually a boy. Owner Margot Fluitsma said when they brought the mixed-breed puppy home from the pound 14 years ago, the family was told she was a he. “We took her to get her business done and the vet told us she was a girl.” Miss Fluitsma said they already liked the name so stuck with it. “I think we named her before we got to the car.” City council figures show there were 426 registered dogs named Max, nine of which are females. That made it the second most popular dog name in the city. The most popular overall dog name was Bella, with 579 registered, making it the most favoured name for female pooches. The top five female names were Bella, Poppy, Molly, Ruby and Rosie, while the top male names were Max, Charlie, Jack, Toby and Buddy.

Motorist’s second close call By Andrew King THE MOTORIST who miraculously escaped death when his vehicle rolled more than 500m down a Banks Peninsula hillside is no stranger to near misses. Luke Wigram walked away from the wreck with broken ribs fingers and bruising. “The last thing I remember is being violently thrown around. I expected to die when the car left the road,” he told The Star yesterday. In 1994, Mr Wigram was a student at Tai Poutini Polytechnic in Greymouth. On April 27, his class visited Cave Creek in the Paparoa National Park, and walked onto the platform which would collapse when another class visited the following day, killing 13 students and a Department of Conservation field officer. Said Mr Wigram yesterday: “I remember one of my fellow classmates saying I don’t think it should be shaking like this.” Now Mr Wigram, 39, is counting his lucky stars again. He was driving on Summit Rd in his Ford Focus station wagon, near Little Akaloa, on Friday, when

“If I have a guardian angel, it is probably taking a well-deserved break now.” Mr Wigram was discharged from hospital on Tuesday. Senior Constable Tim Johnson said he had never seen a crash like it result in the driver walking away alive. “About 450m off the side of the road was the engine, a further 50m were a couple of wheels wedged into a fence and about 100m down from that was what was left of the car,” he said. “He is incredibly lucky.” •Dangerous intersections, p9

hail started to fall on light snow on the road. The vehicle slid off the road and started to roll down the hill. All he could do was concentrate on keeping his limbs inside the vehicle, said Mr Wigram. Then he lost consciousness. When he came to, he climbed out of the badly mangled vehicle, sore, but incredibly lucky. He found his cellphone in his pocket and dialled 111.

Said Mr Wigram: “I just stayed on the line with the dispatcher who kept me going. Asking me questions about what injuries I had, could I hear sirens, that sort of thing.” He was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. “There was a general surprise that I could survive the roll down the bank and have few injuries,” he said.

Decision whether to charge coach may be made tomorrow By Gabrielle Stuart POLICE MAY decide tomorrow if charges will be laid over alleged abuse of a young rugby player by a coach from another team. West Melton under-14.5s coach Amanda Tomlinson has been accused of verbally and physically abusing a Lincoln player after a match early last month. The altercation happened after an incident between the boy and a West Melton player during the match. The Canterbury Rugby Football Union began an investigation last month, but that was put on hold after the police became involved. Senior Sergeant Peter Stills told The Star witnesses were still being interviewed, but a decision about the next step in the case was likely to be made by the end of the week. Tomlinson told The Star last month she grabbed the boy by the collar “so he would look me in the eye,” after he kicked a player from her team in the mouth. CRFU chief executive Nathan Godfrey said the investigation into Tomlinson’s behaviour was on hold, but the incident between the players during the match may be separately investigated.

Christchurch’s Labour MPs will benefit •From page 1 Christchurch Labour MPs yesterday admitted Mr Little’s departure had been unexpected. But they believe his demise will in fact help them in the polls. “Andrew looked at those numbers and made an assessment of what stability looked like for Labour, and he made that call that it was Jacinda,” Dr Woods said. She said Labour had strong policies on Canterbury issues, including pledges to fund a Christchurch specialist mental health team and put $100m into Rolleston commuter rail, and they would stay the same under the new leadership. But National candidates were equally confident the change would go in their favour. Wigram National candidate David Hiatt said the change reflected badly on Labour’s ability to lead the country. “We’re busy putting up hoardings while Labour is taking theirs down,” he said. Christchurch Central MP Nicky Wagner believed the fact that Ms Ardern was from Waikato and Kelvin Davis, Labour’s

new deputy, from Northland, would have an impact. “From a South Island and Christchurch perspective, it’s unfortunate that both leaders are from Auckland,” she said. Dr Hayward said Ms Ardern and Mr Davis were a “powerful duo”. Ms Ardern had appeal, while Mr Davis had strong connections with the provinces and appealed to Maori and entrepreneurial education, she said. Dr Hayward said the change in party leadership meant there was a real shift making way for fresh ideas and new thinking. That would benefit Labour’s current Christchurch MPs and candidates, she said. “We lost a lot with John Key moving away from National leadership. He was from Christchurch. It was replaced with complacency and business as usual.” Voters would see it as a chance for change, and possibly revisiting plans, such as the blueprint, she said. “People will start thinking that change is possible.”

Labour’s crisis: What Christchurch Central The leadership change may add more fire to the hotly contested Christchurch Central seat. It was always a Nicky safe Labour seat – Wagner until 2011. That year the race between incumbent Brendon Burns and challenger Nicky Wagner was so close, it was tied on election night. After special votes were counted, Ms Wagner won the seat by 47 votes. In 2014, she increased her margin to a comfortable 2420 votes. Labour candidate Duncan Webb says the leadership crisis has injected interest in the election, and would increase the Christchurch Central 2014 election results •Nicky Wagner, National – 46%, 15,346 votes •Tony Milne, Labour – 39%, 12,926 votes •Party vote: 45% National, 26% Labour, 16% Greens, 7% NZ First

turnout. “What I’m finding is a massive sense of excitement from a whole lot of people who were previously bored by the election,” he said. “That will help Labour and it will help me, because unless people are excited by the election they’re not going to turn out and vote.” Ms Wagner would not be Duncan drawn on the Webb leadership crisis: “Labour’s leadership is a matter for Labour,” she said. But she did comment on their background: The fact Jacinda Ardern was from Waikato and Kelvin Davis from Northland, compared with Bill English’s background in Southland. “From a South Island and Christchurch perspective, it’s unfortunate that both leaders are from Auckland,” she said. they are saying She said Labour had strong policies around things like health funding and commuter rail in Canterbury, and those policies would stay stable under Ms Ardern’s leadership. Christchurch East National list MP Joanne Hayes herself calls Christchurch East a “red seat” – at the last election she fell more than 4000 votes short of incumbent Poto Williams. But the leadership change had added to her confidence, she said. “I think it’s going to make it an interesting Joanne battle between the Hayes parties on the left, while for me I’m going to carry on with my campaign,” she said. Christchurch East 2014 election results: •Poto Williams, Labour – 48%, 15,221 votes •Jo Hayes, National – 35%, 11,148 votes •Party vote: 40% National, 32% Labour, 13% Greens, 9% NZ First

She said she had spent the last four years meeting local people and working to help them, and she believed that would also up her chances. But Ms Williams believed the change would go in her favour. She said Ms Ardern was already well-known in the area, and had already spoken at several community meetings as deputy leader about issues like health and children’s issues. She believed it could also increase voter Poto Williams turnout. “I think our change has inspired people to vote Labour,” she said. Port Hills Ruth Dyson has been MP in the Port Hills area since 1993, but this year National list MP Nuk Korako has put up a strong challenge. Ms Dyson said the leadership change would give her a stronger edge. “Not just from young people but from older voters, too, I haven’t had a negative response

She said Ms Ardern was wellknown and respected in the electorate, and could both keep the Labour caucus united and appeal to voters. “People recognise Andrew Little was working really hard, but he wasn’t making a Ruth Dyson connection with people in the way parties need to,” she said. Mr Korako would not say whether he thought the leadership change would be a positive or negative for his campaign. “For me, all my focus remains completely on my campaign, putting my best foot forward for the people of my electorate, and that won’t change,” he said. •Coverage: Gabrielle Stuart

Safety barriers fast tracked by estuary By Bridget Rutherford and Sarla Donovan THE INSTALLATION of new safety barriers along a stretch of road that has seen two serious crashes within a year has been brought forward to prevent further accidents. New barriers will be installed along part of Main Rd near Shag Rock this month. They were meant to be done in February. City council transport operations manager Aaron Haymes said the risk of further accidents meant they were fast tracked. In March, Maureen Imrie, 73, died when the vehicle her husband Bruce was driving slammed through the wooden barrier near Shag Rock and plunged into the sea. It came a year after repeat drink driver Sarah Arrow crashed through a nearby barrier in Moncks Bay, badly injuring a pedestrian. Mr Haymes said they could not ignore those accidents. He said permanent barriers were being installed as part of current underground

infrastructure work at the Shag Rock corner. Temporary ones were in place. They would be extended an additional 100m southwards to cover where the fatal crash occurred, at a cost of $60,000, he said. The city council would also do an assessment of a 160m section between the new barrier and the existing concrete barrier south of the site, costing an extra $92,000, he said.

Most dangerous intersections named By Gabrielle Stuart CHRISTCHURCH intersections are among the most dangerous in New Zealand. The Memorial Ave roundabout near the airport was named fourth highest-risk in the country, one of 12 intersections in Christchurch and Selwyn on the year’s NZ Transport Agency top-100 list. The intersection is currently being upgraded from a roundabout to an overpass, in an effort to make it safer. Also named on the list were three different intersections along Marshland Rd, two on Riccarton Rd and two on Shands Rd.

CHANGES: The intersection of Memorial Ave and Russley Rd, which was named fourth most dangerous in the country, is currently being upgraded to make it safer.

The list, released by the NZTA this week, uses data from crashes between 2006 and last year. The intersections are ranked based on the number of fatal crashes, and crashes which leave people injured. NZTA road safety manager Bruce Richards said the list would be used to prioritise which intersections should be upgraded. People were injured in 30 crashes at the Memorial Ave roundabout over the past 10 years, including four crashes classified as serious. Mr Richards believed that would change once the intersection was upgraded, which is being done as part of the $112 million Russley Rd upgrade. On Marshland Rd, the intersection with Prestons Rd has been upgraded, but there are no plans to change the intersections with Hawkins Rd and Shirley Rd, which ranked 43rd and 73rd on the list. Mr Richards said work on those roads would be considered, but it was made more complicated because work on the Northern Arterial Extension could change how much traffic there was on the roads.

RISKY: Three Marshland Rd intersections made the country’s top 100 most dangerous. Top – Shirley Rd, Middle – Prestons Rd. Bottom – Hawkins Rd.

By Sarla Donovan CANTERBURY West Coast Air Rescue Trust has just had its three busiest days on record, attending 22 missions from Friday to Sunday. To put that in perspective, crews would normally cover six to nine incidents over a three-day period. Chief executive Christine Prince said spikes generally came from a combination of ski jobs and weatherrelated road conditions such as heavy rain or ice, leading to more vehicle accidents. So it was excellent timing for local car dealership Miles Toyota to gift two new vehicles to the air rescue trust yesterday. Miles Toyota chief

executive Andre Heyns said the trust provided a critical service and when it approached him for assistance, he saw a “valuable opportunity” to partner with another Canterbury institution. “We’re communitybased and focused so it was an easy decision from out point of view.” Intensive care paramedic and winch operator Mike McLintock takes it all in his stride. “Winter is a busy time for us, what with the skifields and our other normal work. We were down in Timaru twice on Sunday, with one job coming in from Fox Peak skifield. Yesterday we were up at Mt Hutt for two back injury patients.”

There was a corresponding increase in paperwork which people didn’t see, Mr McLintock said. “We do have a great group of people here though,” he adds, including three full-time staff who are based at the headquarters 24/7. The cars would be used as general support vehicles for events and fundraising. In Mr McLintock’s 14 years with the service he had seen a huge increase in the number of jobs they perform each year. “We now do over 700 a year, up from 300 when I first started.” The trust has to fundraise $7 million annually on top of what it receives from the Government to provide the services.

Christ’s, Shirley bands in final TWO Christchurch bands will battle it out against the country’s best in the final of this year’s Smokefreerockquest. Christ’s College band Run77 and Shirley Boys’ High School’s Fuzhun will compete at the national final in Auckland on September 2. Run77, made up of Angus Mossman, Robert Rolleston, Henry Phelps, and brothers Angus and George Murray, won the Canterbury final. Fuzhun’s members include Gideon Valavala, Tasipale Valavala, Michael Mose, Loutoa Osai, Temuera Hay, Josh Mosa’ati and Keenan Jarvis. The band won last year’s regional final. Bands from across the country competed in regional competitions from May to early July. The regional finalists then made 12min videos performing their original music. Those videos were judged by a panel made up of New Zealand musicians. Judge and Silver Scroll award-winner, Thomas Oliver, said the music was unique this year. “It’s so good to see some really strong writers ready to make their way into the New Zealand music industry.” The final, where 12 acts will compete for the title, will be held

the Christchurch Housing Accord, which is an agreement between the city council and Government to boost the housing supply. The site, between Colombo and Manchester Sts, was owned by property developer David Henderson. He sold it to the city council in 2008, which then sold to the Crown. Another of Mr Henderson’s former properties, the old Sydenham School site on Colombo St, is being developed into housing under the accord as well. Atlas Quarter will have 109 townhouses and apartments, as well as ground floor shops. There would be a shared courtyard in the middle.

Flood response better than fire But residents want solution By Bridget Rutherford BETTER communication was the key improvement during last month’s flood response, the city council says. City council emergency operations centre controller Mary Richardson said they were criticised for poor communication during the Port Hills fire, and learned from that. She said this time around, its communication and public information practices worked “exceptionally Mary Richardson well”. There were short, regular updates with key facts throughout last month’s flooding, particularly before it started on July 21, she said. A small team managed the rostering and tasked staff well, so there was no confusion, she said. Ms Richardson said another improvement was an online

registration process on the city council’s website that allowed people to receive regular updates and let the city council know if they had been evacuated. She said they started the process immediately during the floods, whereas during the fire, it began too late. “We used this to regularly communicate during the event.” Ms Richardson said if people registered on the city council

website, it could then ask what help they needed. During the Port Hills fire, evacuated residents received mixed messages about cordons. At one stage, Civil Defence told media 40 homes had been destroyed before later correcting that figure to three due to “misinformation”. Mayor Lianne Dalziel said while many were concerned about the city council’s flood protection programme, a lot of

residents were “overwhelmingly complimentary” about the response. Southshore Residents Association chairman Bill Simpson said communication had always been good, but the stopbank infrastructure was not there to protect the area from flooding. “The decision-making should have been done two, three or four years ago,” Mr Simpson said. “That’s why residents get so angry. They know what needs to be done and what will happen if it’s not. And that’s exactly what happened.” The city council is preparing a report on the feasibility of a proposal for estuary edge protection. City councillor Yani Johanson, whose Linwood Ward suffered a lot of the brunt of the flooding, said the registration process was a huge improvement from the fire. City councillor Raf Manji said the information processes were “much better”. “The more information you give people, the better they feel. So I think there’s been a big improvement.”

Port Hills blaze a lesson during flooding By Bridget Rutherford MAYOR LIANNE Dalziel called an early state of emergency during the recent floods because of learnings from the Port Hills fire. Ms Dalziel made the announcement on July 22 at about 11.20am after relentless rain caused widespread flooding. It was called a “precautionary approach” because of river level rises due that afternoon, Ms Dalziel said. “As it turned out this was the right call because we had all agencies and systems in place to support and evacuate residents when the flooding occurred.” When asked if the state of emergency was called early because of criticism and learnings received during the Port Hills fire, Ms Dalziel said “yes”. By the time the state of emergency was called on February 15 during the fire, it had burned for two days, causing hundreds to evacuate their homes. Many said it came too late. Two separate fires started on Marleys Hill and Lansdowne on February 13. By February 15, a wind shift caused the fires to merge. Police say the Marleys Hill fire was suspicious.

Keeping the peace while others go PREVENTION: Senior Sergeant Gordon Spite said the Police Support Unit works alongside the University of Canterbury Students’ Association to help run events and The Foundry. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER

The Star continues its series on the work police in Canterbury are doing on crime prevention, heading off trouble before it starts. Bridget Rutherford reports on the Police Support Unit IT’S 6PM on a Friday. After-work drinks have begun, university students are prepping for parties, and everyone is excited the weekend has arrived. But as the rest of the city kicks back, the Police Support Unit goes into overdrive. The unit deals with keeping the public order, major event policing, monitoring licensed premises, and supporting other police units when needed. Senior Sergeant Gordon Spite, who is in charge of the unit’s 21 staff, said in the areas they covered, alcohol played a significant role. Most Friday and Saturday nights, the unit is called to multiple parties – many of which are hosted by university students in Riccarton and Ilam. While many are random callouts, police already know some are happening. With the launch of the Good One website in 2014, people are now able to give police a headsup and, in turn, police can give

them some words of wisdom before the party. A host can go onto the website and register their party, along with the address, time and date, and their name and phone number. The police District Command Centre is then notified and an email is sent to the host with tips for keeping the party under control. A “risk assessment” is done based on the number of people attending and the demographic. “If there were 20 people we wouldn’t worry, but if there were 250 people, we’d be a little concerned about that,” Senior Sergeant Spite said. He said police don’t want to ruin parties. It takes about two hours to shut one down, with up to 20 staff. “We’re taking staff away from stuff they should be at.” After they start at 6pm, the unit will visit or drive past the party addresses to make sure everything is running smoothly.

If needed, officers can go inside and ask if the host needs any assistance. Once they’ve visited, it’s rare for them to go back a second time, Senior Sergeant Spite said. “The spin-offs have been great. There’s less police time spent dealing with these sorts of incidents, less victimisation and less offending,” he said. “It appeals to people’s innate

desire to do the right thing.” The statistics speak for themselves. Last year, the unit attended 825 parties, made up of about 64,000 people. Between 2015 and 2016, there had been a 54 per cent reduction in disorder, 44 per cent reduction in assaults, 27 per cent reduction in damage, and a 22 per cent reduction in noise.

Senior Sergeant Spite said often hosts could be naive, or unaware of how quickly things could get out of control. Social media did not help. But he said not everyone was receptive to Good One, and would not register. Often those were the ones that needed to be shut down. And at times, it could get “ugly”. The unit has formation, baton and shield training half a day each week. Protective gear, such as helmets, are always on hand. “I hear people say it incites the crowd if you wear protective equipment. But I see it like a builder going into the building site. If a bottle flies, my guys are going to put on helmets. I can’t afford to have injured staff,” Senior Sergeant Spite said. “We just have to make that assessment on the night.”

Vero and AA Insurance May Extinguish Unresolved EQ Claims Vero and AA Insurance have refused to give a blanket extension to the date that they will plead the Limitation Act as a defence to unresolved earthquake claims. This will mean that any claim against them for earthquake damage caused more than 6 years ago, which has not been filed in either the District Court or the High Court before 5pm on 4 September 2017, will be relying on the good faith of those insurers to pay any amount over the EQC cap. There is a possibility that these claims may still be able to be enforced, if the courts decide that the limitation period starts from a date other than the date of damage. For example, Tower has stated that it believes the limitation period starts from when a claim is settled or rejected by it. You will still be able to request your insurer pay your claim after the deadline, but you will not be able to challenge their assessment of the value of the claim in court. You will simply have to trust and accept what they say they should pay you. This is not a position you want to be in.

If you think there is even a small chance of your claim with Vero or AA Insurance going over cap, or that there is damage that has not been correctly scoped, repaired or paid out for you should contact your insurer and ask if they will extend the deadline for you. You must get written confirmation of the extension from them to protect your claim. If you have not lodged a claim with your insurer, you should do so immediately. If Vero or AA will not confirm in writing that they will not be relying on the Limitation Act, you must file a claim in the District Court before 5pm on 4 September 2017 to protect your claim. This will cost you $200 in filing fees, plus lawyer’s fees. If you can’t afford this, contact Earthquake Services who can assist you.

THERE IS NO TIME TO DELAY, YOU NEED TO TAKE ACTION NOW

The deadline may apply to all claims, including ones where EQC have not yet put it over cap, and also to claims that have been settled by EQC by repair or by payment, where there is further damage that has not been repaired or paid for.

out and have fun at the weekend Senior Sergeant Spite said it was common for bottles to be thrown at officers. He had been hit himself. Often the problematic parties were attended by the same people, many of them under-18. Officers recognised them because they had caused trouble previously. When it came to major events, such as sports fixtures, Cup and Show Week, and concerts, intoxication was a problem. But the key was to make sure those people didn’t get in the gate. “If in doubt, keep them out,” Senior Sergeant Spite said. “The problem at the door is multiplied by 10 the moment you let them in the door.” But over the last four years he had been in charge of the unit, there had been a huge improvement, he said. “We’ve seen really good improvements in the way the events are being run. The operators are doing alcohol management plans and planning for contingencies.” The role of police in the unit is to watch over the event cordon and just the presence of officers can help prevent trouble. Traditionally, cricket matches

Improvement at parties from 2015 to 2016 •54 per cent reduction in disorder •44 per cent reduction in assaults •27 per cent reduction in damage •22 per cent reduction in noise had been problematic because people were sitting drinking in the sun all day. But Senior Sergeant Spite said that had changed since Hagley Oval was established. “That cricket ground is awesome. It’s the environment, it’s family-focused. It has a huge impact on the behaviour of people.” He said they liked to look at the crowd’s behaviour as a whole at each event. One drunk person being kicked out did not put a dampener on a good event, he said. Each event is policed, based on what it is. For example, they would put more staff on a rugby match that was between higher ranked teams, Senior Sergeant Spite said. Some musicians playing concerts could be “perceived as higher risk”, he said.

FRIENDLY: Traditionally cricket matches have been problematic for police, but the “family-focussed” environment at Hagley Oval has improved behaviour.

“Somebody like Elton John is not going to attract problems.” The unit also does a lot of work with universities when planning for particular events, such as Canterbury’s Tea Party, and Lincoln’s Garden Party to make sure they run smoothly. “The event itself is not the problem, the real risk is before.” The unit also collaborates on all student association events, and works with the University of Canterbury Students’

Association to run The Foundry. The unit’s 21 officers are some of the most recognised faces in police, Senior Sergeant Spite said. That’s because they walk the beat. They are out talking to people during the day, and are monitoring behaviour during the night, particularly on the weekends. The earthquakes have had a big impact. Because bars are now spread out, congregations of people are rare.

Senior Sergeant Spite said when he walked the beat before the quakes, the intersection of Colombo and Hereford Sts was a hot spot for fighting and indecent behaviour. “Everyone would converge on that corner because they would be going for a feed. There were all these different groups and just this constant clash and the place just looked like a bomb zone.” But now, officers had to drive to where the bars were, rather than covering the central city on foot. “One of our biggest concerns is people not sticking together in town.” Officers were out patrolling making sure those people got home safely, he said. “The weather has a huge affect on public order. If it’s raining, we won’t be particularly busy outside.” At times, the unit was called to help in other areas, like the Port Hills fire and evacuations during the recent flooding. Senior Sergeant Spite said he was happy with his unit’s commitment to keeping people safe. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Movie lovers rejoice – film festival MOVIE LOVERS will have even more options to choose from as the New Zealand International Film Festival launches in Christchurch today. The festival will run until August 20, with international, national and local films to air at the Isaac Theatre Royal and Hoyts Northlands.

Christchurch festival host Nick Paris (left) has picked his top-10 films to see during the festival. Our Hospitality was number one on the list. The old black and white film

was originally directed by Buster Keaton in the 1920s, but has been restored and will be played during the festival. But it will be a bit different, because the music for the film will be played live at the screenings by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra at the Isaac Theatre Royal.

Our Hospitality, an old black and white film directed by Buster Keaton, has been restored and will be accompanied by live music from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra at the Isaac Theatre Royal. Seven Rivers Walking will be on show during the festival. Filmmakers Gaylene Barnes and Kathleen Gallagher look at the damage done to Canterbury’s rivers, and how it can be remediated.

Christchurch’s One Island of Good follows the story of youths who had been kicked out of schools and were part of the alternative education class at YMCA. The filming took place over a year, including during a trip to Nepal.

Our People

Sarah Webber

Family photographer explores Christchurch photographer Sarah Webber made world headlines with her photo-shopped images of orca, dolphins and the Loch Ness monster frolicking in a flooded Heathcote River. She talks to Sarla Donovan What was it like to have your photographs go all around the world? It’s incredible. I never imagined that I’d even get a response from the Beckenham community Facebook page. So to have all these people contact me – it was quite surreal. I don’t know how I felt – overwhelmed. How did it come about? I photograph everything – if it’s raining, if it’s flooding, if it’s snowing, I’ll be out there with my camera. When I came home and looked at my photos, I thought they were boring so, just for fun, I put the Loch Ness monster in one of them and posted it to the Beckenham neighbourhood Facebook page. They all just started laughing, and liking, and commenting, and requesting more, more, more. They wanted whales and dolphins so I so did it, purely just to make them smile and laugh. And I was rushing through them, too, it’s not even good photo-shopping, I’m just quickly getting them out. It was just all a bit of fun. Were you surprised that some people thought they were real? Yes, very surprised. I barely took 5min on each photo. If I’d known they were going to go worldwide, I would have taken more time. The BBC did a story on them and the Fox Live Morning Show in Denver, Colorado, did a piece on it and showed my images, so that was

pretty amazing. How long have you been a photographer? I started getting into photography when my eldest daughter was born in 2010 and then turned professional around 2013. I’d always wanted to do photography at high school (Avonside Girls’ High) but I didn’t want to do seventh form art. I didn’t pursue a degree or qualification because I just wanted to do photography. So that turned me towards other things.

What did you do instead? After high school, I went to teachers college and did a degree in primary school teaching and learning. After some relief teaching, I moved to Brisbane and worked in early childhood over there. I was young, wanted warmer weather and just to do something before I settled down. We were there for four years, then I came home with my partner, now my husband, and started a family. And, of course, with a newborn baby, you just want to take photos of them

every second of the day. It was about that time I got a decent SLR camera and I just self-taught from there. I didn’t go to any schools, just practice, practice, practice every day. A friend suggested I take it professional, so I did. With my teaching and childcare background, I got along with children and babies so that’s naturally where I started: Photographing babies, children, families and I just love it. Not so much the studio stuff, I love meeting families in their homes, in the gardens or at the beach. My real passion is the storytelling, the journalistic type of image. People in show business say never work with children or animals . . . you do both. What’s the secret? Haha, I consider myself to be a big kid really. And, with the teaching background, I find it easy to quickly build a rapport with children. I get down at their level and just play before I even start a session. As for the animals, well most of them are just so cute who wouldn’t want to work with them. Have you ever had a total nightmare on a photoshoot? I haven’t had any nightmare shoots yet. The worst it’s been would be when a ‘cake smash’ session gets out of control, you know, a crying toddler running onto my carpet with bright pink icing all over their body. Luckily, I don’t offer cake smash sessions anymore. What other hobbies/interests do you have? Spending time with my family is a high priority for me. We like to get out and about and explore new parks and beaches, usually with our golden retriever, Perry, in tow. Perry had a field day digging huge muddy holes all over our yard during the floods unfortunately. He wasn’t popular, though it did provide some funny photo opportunities

for me. I also have to admit that I do enjoy a good sauvignon blanc in the evenings after a long day. Drinking wine can be a hobby right? Are the rest of your family still here in Christchurch? Yes, I am very lucky to have all of my family on both sides living here in Christchurch. Mum and Dad have always been keen photographers so I guess that may have been where my passion for photography stemmed from. Mum takes gorgeous wildlife shots wherever she travels, and lives adjacent to a reserve packed with oodles of native flora and fauna. Where do you head away for family holidays? Family holidays don’t come too often with work commitments. However, we do love a good beach getaway. Our favourite local spot is Okains Bay, which is an old childhood regular. We love the Coromandel and the warmth that the North Island provides, but my ultimate holiday is somewhere tropical with cocktails and nothing much to do other than swim and lounge in the sun.

the surreal How did you and your husband meet? We met here in Christchurch, quite embarrassingly at a bar. He was doing part-time bar work while studying and I was a teachers college student. Sam’s now a network engineer. How long have you been in your current house? We’ve been here for nearly two years now. When we were looking at this particular house we fell in love with the area but, ultimately, what sold it to us was the gorgeous, large, established backyard. Perfect for the kids and photo opportunities of course. We have no plans to move any time soon. How did you manage during the quakes, was it quite disruptive? The quakes were an awful and an unsettled time for everyone in Christchurch. Our ‘then home’ was right next to the forests and beach and was actually the ultimate portrait photographers back yard. However, there was much devastation to the area, including our street, so we decided to move on. Luckily to another photographers dream

area – Beckenham – with hills, rivers and reserves. I am primarily an ‘on location’ photographer so I didn’t have to worry about a damaged studio. However, the recent floods flooded our garage where I store my studio equipment –backdrops, lights and flooring for when I do any commercial work or mini studio sessions – so that aspect of my work might have to be put on hold for a little while. Has this experience sparked any new ideas for you – any new projects or plans? I’ve half-jokingly thought about doing those fantasy scenes where there’ll be an elephant and the child is superimposed on the back of the elephant so it looks like it’s going on a safari. I’m not really serious, it’s not personally something I’d add to my portfolio – but if the demand was there. And I’m just going to carry on doing my family portraits. I’ve been selling digitals only but I’ve been wanting to offer heirloom products like albums and folio boxes, so that’s next on the agenda.

MYTHICAL: A stampeding elephant moves through the muddy waters near the Heathcote River.

Tough few days but we must look ahead IT’S BEEN a tough but invigorating few days for Labour. We saw immense courage from Andrew Little in his decision to stand down as leader. Andrew put the good of the party before himself and made the assessment that Jacinda Ardern was better placed to lead us into September’s election. Andrew worked as hard as is humanly possible for a Labour victory and stepped down because he put the interests of working people and the party first. Jacinda and Kelvin Davis, as

deputy, have stepped up and both have had an immediate and positive effect. They say a week is a long time in politics. Well we have seven-and-a-half of those weeks until the election. In this time we have so much to do, but we have policies, candidates and funds in hand to run an excellent campaign. Jacinda and Kelvin are a powerful leadership team who have the ability to connect with people on a personal level. We know that we have to run

the campaign of our lives. We intend to do just that. As a party, we have huge aspirations for New Zealand. A place where everyone has a roof over their head and meaningful work, where education is free and good ideas flourish, where children live surrounded by

creativity not poverty, and where we build a reputation as world leaders on environmental issues. The good news for us here in Canterbury is that Jacinda and Kelvin understand, just as Andrew did, that Christchurch has to be a continued focus for any

Government. The job is not complete in our recovery and we need to remove the roadblocks allowing us to flourish. Mental health, getting our houses fixed, and making sure there are permanent schools for our children will be front and centre for a Labour government. We will be looking to future and building a city that builds a rail public transport system ready for the 21st-century. •Megan Woods is Labour’s Canterbury spokeswoman

We said:

Lianne Dalziel

An end to unfair treatment? THIS WEEK’S decision of the NZ Court of Appeal in favour of the ‘Quake Outcasts’ hopefully brings to an end the unfair treatment applied to people who were ‘red zoned’ and were uninsured on February 22, 2011. Two years ago the Supreme Court ruled the decision to treat these people differently from everyone else in the ‘red zone’ was unlawful. The Government thought it could retrospectively do a recovery plan that continued to discriminate against people who weren’t insured, in spite of the fact that insurance had nothing to do with the zoning of their land. The Government said it was a ‘moral hazard’ to pay out people who were uninsured. The city council made a strong submission on the draft recovery plan for equal treatment – it was an area-wide decision and needed an area-wide solution. In our submission, we compared two uninsured properties – one in the ‘green zone’ and the other in the ‘red zone’. The home in the ‘green zone’ could of course be repaired and many were – without insurance. Habitat for Humanity made no judgements about why families were uninsured – they just needed help. The then governor-general, who was the patron for Habitat for Humanity, said at the time: “Some of [the people Habitat for

Humanity are helping] are at their wits’ end. For them, there seems to be no way for their problems to be resolved, and then to have these strangers turn up at the doorstep full of compassion and wanting to help them, it’s fantastic and moving, and for most of them it does get emotional.” The Government’s decision left these homeowners in a position where even the charitable sector couldn’t step in to help. The Court of Appeal repeated the Supreme Court’s findings by highlighting that a number of the Quake Outcasts group could not be described as making a “conscious choice” not to insure their properties. Here’s one example – a couple who had overlooked changing insurance cover into their name because of stress from a cancer diagnosis and caring for dependent family members. This couple was uninsured at the time of the September 4, 2010, earthquake and their insurance company had refused cover even though they had had insurance with the company since 1972. Let us hope that this is the end of the matter and that the Government steps up with a further offer that truly helps people move on. •If you want to ask Ms Dalziel a question, email mayor@ccc.govt.nz. Put Reader’s Question in the subject line.

Trying to sell your vehicle on the side of the road could soon be illegal as part of a new city council bylaw John Stone – Hasn’t the council got anything better to do? Private sales of vehicles on the side of the road doesn’t hurt anyone. If its really creates “hazards and distractions” then the council would need to ban sales of cherries, firewood, flowers and fruit from the side of the road too. While they are at it, they can also ban billboards, hoardings and posters during council elections. They are particularly dangerous. Scotty Wilson – If I want to advertise my car for sale I will, it’s a free country.

CHANGES: Vehicles parking on busy streets to sell their vehicles could be banned as part of a city council bylaw change.

Jessica M Saunders – I think it’s good for busy streets. I hate it when a guy parks cars for sale on Hills Rd. There is already limited street parking and it’s difficult to see around the parked cars. Joy Scarlett – About time, Riccarton Rd is becoming a joke . . . why hasn’t the city council stopped it before now? Paul Meikle – Typical council stupidity and a chance to raise revenue. Steven Blomfield – It’s getting truly pathetic, the city council has far too much power. I’ll sell my car where and how I want. Conrad Fitz-Gerald – Good to see the council’s got the big problems sorted. Scotty Wilson – It seriously has nothing better to, does it? We said: An 8.4m replica of Christ Church Cathedral’s steeple will be rolled around the city to show people how the real thing could be rebuilt like an Amish ‘barn raising’

treatment to teen Maddie Collins is adamant she will honour her pledge You said: You said: Lee Nicholls – The Amish would of got stuck in and finish the job like four years ago for a fraction of the cost. We have to go through the process of consultants and other pen pushers sucking up heaps of cash first. Lynn Mortlock – As a Cantabarian, I think it has merit but I doubt the Canadian would. Leonie Underdown – I just wish they would get it sorted. I cried when I saw it last year and nothing has been done since. Pauline Barker – Yes they’re amazing, done in a day. We said: A woman who said she would give $1.5m for potential life saving

Andrew Lamont – Sounds like the typical New Zealander. All full of good intentions until they have to actually do what they say they’ll do. Michelle Hardy – Sounds like she’s been conned into the same email I got. This women is probably paying money to get the inheritance released. I myself decided to not go ahead with wanting $42 million so I deleted the email. I feel sorry for Maddie and her family. Unfortunately, this lady really believes she is getting that money. Grada Dixon – Wonder if she’s waiting for that large sum of money from Nigeria lol. Seriously though, hope this young lady gets the treatment. Jo Grant-Lindsay – What blood group do you need to be to be able to even offer a chance to help.

GARDENING ADVICE

What better way to celebrate Christmas than with a homemade pavlova covered in strawberries you’ve grown yourself. Start planting now and they’ll be ready to munch on in no time! With a Daltons Premium Strawberry Pack, your strawberries will be the best in town.

We have a Daltons Premium Strawberry Pack to give away, full of everything you need to grow juicy red strawberries. Valued at over $70, it contains:

QUESTION

I fed my camellia plants a few weeks ago with the right food. I have three side by side. One has dropped all the leaves and budding up again. What would have caused that?

• • • •

Today’s winning question came from Mary Sefton. Camellias, as with almost all plants, should only be fertilised during the growing season which is roughly from late October until late April. When fertiliser is applied without any uptake of nutrients by the plant, it is possible that excess soluble salts have built up in the rootzone. In many instances, this can lead to leaf fall and sometimes death of a plant. You are lucky that the plant is budding up again. Possibly in your case, heavy winter rains may well have diluted the fertiliser and therefore the possibility of a fatal outcome.

ANSWER

Adding compost around the base of the plant will be beneficial for the camellia’s spring growth. Make sure to also apply light side dressings of Daltons Premium Acid Fertiliser in spring, until the tree has shown that it has fully recovered.

Plant colourful kowhai in your native garden Veronica Armstrong says the colours of some of our favourite native plants are a welcome signal of the new season THE HERALD of spring in the native garden has to be the sunshine yellow kowhai (Sophora species) – even its name means yellow. Its lovely flowers have led to kowhai being considered our national flower. Admittedly, this tree or large shrub can look quite drab

for most of the year, but at springtime it comes into its own by bursting into beautiful yellow flowers. I have a smaller-growing cultivar, Sophora molloyi ‘Dragon’s Gold’, which is more shrub-like in size and this flowers in late winter. This year it started flowering as early as June, perhaps due to our milder autumn. Kowhai are significant to Maori and the flowering on bare branches, before the leaves appear, was a signal that winter was over, frosts were past and it

was time to plant the kumara. The nectar in the tubular yellow flowers is keenly awaited by our nectar-loving birds, the tui, bellbird, kaka and kereru who flock to the trees. I have counted as many as 20 tui in a neighbouring large old kowhai in spring. After flowering the seeds form in pods that hang down from the branches. The seeds usually need scarification (abrasive rubbing to allow water into the seeds) before germinating. This can happen when seeds pass through the gut

of birds, too. The trees do self-seed and I often find seedlings popping up in the garden that can be potted up. Unusually for New Zealand trees, some species of kowhai are deciduous and lose their tiny, green leaves in winter. Other species have a juvenile stage of densely tangled branches before reaching tree size and starting to flower. The only downside to growing kowhai is to take care as all parts of the tree are poisonous, as are so many of our garden plants.

Theatre/Arts

West End actor tells deportation story BRIGHT LIGHTS: After a four-year stint on London’s West End, Nic Kyle (far left) returned home to perform with Jack Marshall and Matt Hudson.

Deported written by Nic Kyle Coffin written by Elliott Langsdon Christ’s College Old Boys’ Theatre Reviewed by Georgia O’ConnorHarding HAVING A home-grown performer make a successful career on London’s West End is no doubt a rarity. And when Nic Kyle puts on an original one-man show and premiers a West End show for the first time in the country, how could any theatre-enthusiast not want to go? Yet, unfortunately, Kyle’s performance attracted a tiny audience on Saturday. No surprises in a rugby-mad country – the Crusaders v Chiefs semi-final clearly won out over Kyle’s slick, hilarious show. Although no one really showed up to that either, so I guess everyone decided to stay home on what was a cold winter night. But the small audience wouldn’t have discouraged Kyle after the trials and tribulations he has been through during his four-year stint in London. And the performance about his overseas experience was spectacular. Having little money, facing endless auditions in front of often unfriendly panels and getting deported from the United Kingdom made perfect content for Kyle’s original one-man show, Deported. Accompanied by Richard Marrett on the piano, Kyle sings and narrates his hilarious tales which include demanding the attention of a disinterested Game of Thrones cast by telling them to put their hands on their heads. When you hear Kyle sing, you can understand why he stood a better chance than most of having a crack at success on the West End. Having a strong, crystalline voice, each song Kyle sung in relevance to his story in London was a treat to hear. I was only surprised Kyle didn’t give more reason during his performance as to why he was deported from the United Kingdom, especially considering it was what the show was named after. The second half of the show, writer Elliott Langsdon’s dark comedy Coffin, was absolute gold. Audiences were lucky to be the first in the country to see it after a sell-out season in London. The most inappropriate and rudest jokes come out in the show about three argumentative brothers waiting for their father’s funeral to begin. However, you’d have to be cursed with no sense of humour to not find the show funny. Punch-ups, jokes about each others love life and endless insults make for non-stop laughter. None are appropriate to share in this forum but don’t let that put you off. Kyle, along with Christchurch performers Matt Hudson and Jack Marshall, each brought their own strengths to the show. A combination of Kyle as the painfully annoying brother, along with Hudson’s poncey persona and Marshall’s pushover character, had the audience screaming with laughter. One can only pray this show comes back to the city again, because it is the funniest production I’ve ever seen.

Hollyford Track – a walk in the park By Mike Yardley DREAM OF embarking on an unforgettable trek in Fiordland? Earlier this year I lost my multi-day hiking virginity, undertaking a three-day guided walk on the Hollyford Track with Ngai Tahu Tourism. It’s the only major low altitude track in Fiordland National Park – ideal for newbies like me. Add to that the lure of well-appointed private lodges with twin share rooms, piping hot showers, flush toilets, first-rate cuisine, jet boats and chopper rides, and these all-inclusive indulgences soften any qualms about physical discomfort. In spite of that, I had spent several weeks getting “trampready”, hauling a backpack with bricks in it, all over the Port Hills. In hindsight, my training was far more arduous than the actual hike, itself. Truth be told, it’s a walk in the park. Our lead guide was Justin, a gregarious 30-year-old with a disarming, free-spirited Kiwi demeanour. He was like a walking, talking wilderness Wikipedia, with a trusting, first-hand sense of authority, knowledge and reverence for the natural realm. In spite of Fiordland’s notoriety for high rainfall, the weather gods

UNSPOILT: Fiordland’s Hollyford Valley offers magnificent views. Right – At the end of a day’s tramping, a venison steak at Pyke Lodge was delightful.

were on their best behaviour as the sun was blazing and the mercury was nudging 25 deg C. Beneath the exalted gaze of the serrated Southern Alps, our first day’s assignment followed the crisp, swift blue-green waters of the Hollyford River, on a gently undulating track through native beech forest, along the valley at the base of the steep and darkforested slopes of the Darren Mountains. Refuge from that beaming sun soon unfurled as we walked in dappled light under the cooling shade of the vast canopy of beech and ferns. The pace was leisurely as Justin brought to life the fascinating history, geology, botany and ecology of the Hollyford.

Sections of ribbonwood and podocarp forest, liberally draped in mosses, ferns and lichens, added great variety and texture to the dominance of the silver beech, before the relatively flat track served up a short climb over Little Homer Saddle. With an elevation of 182m, it was entirely manageable, after which we took in the gushing cascades of Little Homer Falls ahead of the day’s triumphant finish line of Pyke Lodge. As the lodge shuffled into view, a frisson of ecstasy rippled through my body, as lodge hosts, Jesse and Skye, warmly greeted us on the lawn with an inviting tray of thirst-quenchers. After settling in to our private rooms and savouring a steam-

ing hot shower, we retired to the lodge lounge, to be showered again, with an evening of pampered hospitality. I gazed out the window at the dreamy view of Mt Madeleine, tinged in pink, as the lowering sun spangled her peak. Dinner was a delight, headlined by a succulent venison steak and drool-worthy lemon tart. As much as I was ready to fall into a deep sleep, Justin had a playful nocturnal encounter lined up for willing night owls. We followed Justin by torchlight to the banks of the Hollyford River, where a voracious feeding frenzy fast ensued, as he fed the native eels the leftovers from the evening’s venison. They’re possibly the best fed eels in New Zealand, growing 3m long – and some are 70-years-old. This frenetic riverside exposition, alongside the glow worms and a powdered sky of bright stars, brought the curtain down on a cracking day.

FAST FACTS •The Hollyford Track is a three-day easy-paced walk, across 43km, from the mountains to the sea. The walk is suitable for all ages – it’s particularly popular with 40-70 year olds. This is ‘glamping’, or glamorous tramping so you carry little and are well catered to. Expert guides, top-knotch cuisine, comfortable lodges with private bedrooms, transport from Queenstown or Te Anau, day packs and rain jackets are included in the price. Hikers carry a light pack with clothing and lunch on their first day and thereafter an even lighter day pack. A maximum number of 16 guests provides for a fabulously personal experience. The guided walk departs every second day from mid-October to late April. Book well in advance! For more information www. hollyfordtrack.com

Turbo punch for Motorbuys sporty Kia Optima

Below is a small selection of our great deals!

By Ross Kiddie IT’S CARS such as the Kia Optima that we are going to see a lot more of on Kiwi roads when the Australian motor vehicle manufacturing industry shuts down at the end of this year. The Optima is a large four-door sedan which has already proven its worth here in New Zealand and stands out for its clean, bold coupe-like styling and large car attitude, especially with the amount of onboard space it offers. If it is just the need for extra pizzaz that’s standing between you and buying the Optima – now is your chance to pick up a GT version – although you’d better be quick, for the turbocharged 2-litre model is only available in limited numbers. Yes, instead of getting the 2.4-litre engine of its stablemates, the GT gets a 1998cc turbo unit which is rated with a healthy 180kW and 350Nm. The four-cylinder engine is a smart piece of kit, not only does it give solid boost for lively performance – 0-100km/h in 7.4sec and a 240km/h top speed – the engine is also rated with an 8.5l/100km (33mpg) combined cycle fuel usage average. These are healthy figures all round and result in solid overall performance. If you are a driver who likes to hear what an engine is doing, Kia has also manufactured engine sound so that an angry howl enters the cockpit when it is getting a bit of a workout. There are times when I think that sound doesn’t need to be so audible, such as when battling the city street traffic, but it is quite melodic when the high country back roads beckon. On a filthy late June weekend I took the test car on a run up to Terrace Downs. The roads were drenched, so I was quite circumspect as to how

KIA OPTIMA GT: True touring car.

quickly I pushed the evaluation car. Nevertheless, I’m of the opinion the Optima is worthy of a GT badge, it covers ground quickly and handles with much dignity. The GT variant rides on high quality Michelin Pilot tyres and they have a wide footprint at 235/45 x 18in. Given its familycar dynamics, the Optima in this form steers with directional accuracy greater than I was expecting, and it has suspension control which is still well biased towards comfort. • Price – Kia Optima GT, $53,990 • Dimensions – Length, 4855mm; width, 1860mm; height, 1465mm • Configuration – Four-cylinder, frontwheel-drive, 1998cc, 180kW, 350Nm, sixspeed automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 7.4sec • Fuel usage – 8.5l/100km

However, at just under 1.5m tall, the Optima sits low on the road and isn’t bothered by directional change. Gravitational force doesn’t load the suspension and that is the bonus of a fully independent set-up. Drive is directed through to the front wheels, but there’s a neutrality associated with the way the GT handles; I’m not saying it has the perfect feel but it has been engineered so that

the driver gets a lot of satisfaction. That taking into account, too, the surge of power from the engine, which is not blisteringly fast, but does have a strong torque pattern as a result of the boost process. It feels fluid and smooth through the mid-range and doesn’t lurch the transmission. The six-speed automatic is easily capable of handling the power outputs and seemingly to always have the correct ratio selected to enhance performance. Since turbocharging has become fashionable again, I’ve written many times how it is not so much a way to glean performance, but it is also a way to even the power outputs so that fuel burn is not wasted. During my four days with the test car it was showing a constant 10.5l/100km (26mpg) combined cycle average along with a 7l/100km (40mpg) instantaneous figure sitting at a steady 100km/h cruise (engine speed 1750rpm). Inside, the Optima is also a class act. It has a specification level which would sit well in a luxury car and would seem amazing value for a vehicle which lists at just $53,990. Major features on the GT include full leather trim with heated and cooling front seats, heated steering wheel, satellite navigation, paddle-shift gearbox levers, panoramic roof, keyless entry and ignition, radar cruise control, and a whole alphabet soup of safety kit which not only looks impressive on paper but earns a five-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program rating. The Optima GT is no pretender, it is a fine sporttourer worthy of the badge. If you are a buyer, be prepared for a bit of a wait, it needs to be placed on indent order.

Magic Man takes premiership in his stride IN THE quiet and unassuming manner that he brings to his daily life, this season’s national premiership winning jockey Chris Johnson is relatively matter of fact about what he has achieved in the past 12 months. It is Canterbury-based Johnson’s second premiership after first topping the ladder in the 1995-96 season. While Johnson’s tally of 112 winners for the season fell short of the 139 he notched up in his first title 21 years earlier, for the 53-year-old, the season represented an opportunity to continue doing the job he loves, an endeavour which first started back in 1980 and has seen him amass more than 2200 winners. “I’ve always loved racing, although when I first started riding I never thought I’d get to 1000 wins, let alone more than 2000,” he said. “I have had some ups and downs along the way, but I’ve had the opportunity to ride some tremendous horses and have been lucky enough to win a number of big races.” One of a small band of seven riders who have reached the 2000-win milestone in New Zea-

land, Johnson has been fortunate enough to count top gallopers such as Tartan Tights, Loader and Tycoon Lil among his list of standout performers.

Pressed to nominate his most memorable career milestone, he says his victory aboard Sea Swift in the 1988 Auckland Cup. “I think that win on Sea Swift

was something quite special,” he said. “It was a real South Island victory at racing headquarters in the north so it does stand out a bit for me.” While he is quick to admit he has had several low periods throughout his career, even giving the game away for an extended stint between 1999 and 2006, Johnson credits some misfortune late last year as the motivation to achieve his second premiership title. “I’d started the season off pretty well and things were going okay when I copped a decent suspension around Christmas time,” he said. “I hadn’t really come out and confirmed I was thinking about the premiership at that point, but when that happened, I thought I might have really stuffed things up.” Semi-retired barrister John

Tannahill, a long-time friend who also manages Johnson’s North Island rides, admits he too thought the worst when an initial six-day suspension was extended by a further four days after an improper riding charge was reinstated following a special hearing by the Judicial Control Authority. “Based on the rides Chris had booked or in the pipeline, I think he missed out on 11 winners due to the suspension,” Tannahill said. It was also around that time that leading trainers, such as Graeme and Debbie Rogerson, announced they would be supporting Johnson in his bid for the title as he attempted to gun down the runaway leader at the time, Danielle Johnson. “I think when he rode Let Her Rip to victory in the stakes race at Rotorua, it was then we both thought he could do it and, after some pretty hard slog, he has,” Tannahill said. “Personally, I think he is riding better than ever with his fitness level the best it has been in many years and pretty damn good for a 53-year-old.” – NZ Racing Desk

Keas battle Tigers for place in grand-final By Gordon Findlater THE LINWOOD Keas will need to bounce back against the Papanui Tigers on Saturday if they are to stay in the hunt for consecutive Canterbury Rugby League premiership titles. The Keas preliminary final match-up against the Tigers won’t be a walk in the park. The Tigers were too strong for the Celebration Lions in their minor semi-final winning 32-24 at the weekend. The Tigers also defeated the Keas 20-14 in the 2015 grand-final. However, the Keas are yet to concede a point at the hands of the Tigers this season. In their two round-robin meetings, the Keas won 13-0 and 26-0. “We definitely learnt a bit from (the Tigers) throughout the season, but I’m expecting them to be up for this one,” said Keas coach Andrew Auimatagi. “We can’t take too much out of those two wins against them.” The Keas were outdone by the Hornby Panthers 14-22 at the weekend in

their major semi-final at Murphy Park. However, they get a second chance to qualify for the grand-final in Saturday’s match. The Panthers have advanced directly to the grand-final. The Panthers are confident the extra week off can help them win their first Pat Smith Trophy since 2013. “It’s definitely a benefit for us. Last year we had to

play the extra game and it took a lot of our energy,” said Panthers coach Jed Lawrie. “We’ll have a good training run on Saturday and then get along and have a look at the Papanui v Linwood game.” Saturday’s preliminary final kicks off at Murphy Park, Kaiapoi, at 2.45pm. Next weekend’s grandfinal is likely to be played at Denton Oval.

Kearney relationship crucial to Warriors Blair bid By Michael Burgess

ADAM BLAIR admits that, if he leaves the Broncos, the Warriors are a likely destination, due to his close ties with coach Stephen Kearney. The current Kiwis captain is on contract at Brisbane until the end of next season. But ongoing salary-cap pressures at the Broncos may yet force him out and persistent

speculation has linked him with the Warriors. Blair has a close relationship with Kearney, which may prove to be the pivotal factor. He played under Kearney for the vast majority of his 41 tests with the national team, as well as five years at the Storm, during Kearney’s tenure as assistant coach in Melbourne. “I’m really close to ‘Mooks’ [Kearney] and I know what he

stands for. He was someone I looked up to when I watched league. When I first did preseasons at the Storm, he was like a father figure,” Blair said. Blair worked with Kearney for five years in Melbourne before the pair were reunited for three seasons at the Broncos. “I’ve bonded with Stephen really closely throughout my career – at the Storm, New Zealand and again with the

Broncos,” said Blair. “If I was going to go anywhere, I’d rather go somewhere where I know it is going to be a real professional club, similar to the Broncos, similar to the Storm . . . somewhere where they set high standards for the players and are honest with their players.” Blair added it was going to be a difficult call. “It’s tough,” he said. “I’m really happy where I am

and so is my family. “I know there is interest from back home and it is going to be a hard decision, whatever I do.” Blair has played 258 NRL games since his debut in round four of the 2006 season. This season, he has averaged 50 minutes, nine carries and 77 running metres per game. He has also recorded 22 tackles per match. –NZ Herald

Plenty for the Crusaders to overcome in Johannesburg

By Liam Napier SO MUCH of the focus around the Crusaders naturally falls on their exceptional pack. This week, their quest for an unprecedented eighth title could well be decided by the performance of the backline or, more specifically, their ability to match the Lions attack. Christchurch to Johannesburg presents many challenges, such as travelling over the Indian

Ocean and playing 1800m above sea level where fatigue zaps legs and compresses lungs. After spending the past two weeks at home, where the conditions have been tailor-made for their forwards, the Crusaders now face a complete contrast: Confronting a team in the Lions who have forged their success on a hard, fast, dry track in the afternoon sun. No doubt Super Rugby’s conference format and draw gave

WOF ALL CAR SERVICING

Crusaders may need to score more than 40 points to claim the crown. In their last three home playoff games against New Zealand opposition, the Lions have scored 42 points. Johan Ackermann’s men hammered the Blues 43-5 at Ellis Park last year and average 47 points across the board at home this season. They love to use the ball, love to play at pace and, as the Hurricanes discovered last week, never stop coming.

The Crusaders defence laid the foundation for last week’s convincing semi-final victory over the Chiefs. After making 117 more tackles than the Chiefs, there may be questions about how much they have left in the tank, but the Crusaders will back that same resilience to restrict the Lions ability to quickly clock up scoreboard pressure. Clearly, though, the Crusaders attack will also need to fire. –NZ Herald

the Lions a serious advantage by allowing them to avoid Kiwi teams until last week’s semi-final against the Hurricanes. Thus, granting a much easier route to a home final. Last week, the Lions also appeared to benefit from a couple of dubious calls. But their recent record against Kiwi teams in playoff matches at Ellis Park tells us two things: The Lions are a formidable side on home soil, even more so in front of a 63,000 sellout, and the

We have achieved record breaking prices recently!

Underfloor insulation Foam insulated expanded polystyrene panels under the concrete slab act as an insulating barrier, stopping cold coming through from under the house. Garages Insulating the garage and its door will cut down on a steady stream of cold air sneaking into the house. An insulated garage door can lift the temperature substantially even when the garage itself is not heated, making it a more pleasant place to spend time. Any home appliances kept in the garage will use less electricity as they will not have to work as hard and your car battery may last longer. Roof design Roof designs vary. The simplest way to achieve a weather tight house is to have a simple roof design with an overhanging surfeit. Architectural flat roofs will work though more care is needed to achieve weather tightness especially where there are hidden or back roof gutters. Having a roof with no overhang also requires more care with the design due to its complexity and potential for problems. Regular maintenance to clean out leaves and debris that gets caught in the roof will be advantageous in both cases. Porticos Taking the roof out beyond the house is ideal for providing a sheltered area for spending time outdoors when the weather is inclement. Snow straps or guttering protection Wherever snow is a likely part of winter, installation of snow straps is a good idea. These prevent damage to guttering from the weight of snow as it slides off the roof. Alternatively, an expanded steel mesh product such as Gutter Guard could be fitted. This has the added benefit of preventing

spouting blockages from leaf and other debris. Capitalise on the sun Maximise the sun’s free energy with plenty of windows, especially on the north side of the house. Outdoor areas When choosing a house design, consider how it will sit on the section and whether it offers potential to catch sun inside the home and for sunny sheltered outdoor areas away from prevailing winds. Windows and doors Upgrade on the minimum standard for double glazing with thermally broken joinery and low-emissivity argon gas filled windows and doors, increasing insulation effectiveness. Energy efficient heating Explore heating options, selecting what will work best given the size of home and family needs. Heat pumps are an efficient form of heating with two cassette and energy saving options available while heat transfer systems are great if there is a log burner.

A familiar face returns to the Richmond Club THAT’S right folks, Emma Palaamo has returned to the Richmond Club Bistro, and this time she is running it! Emma last worked at the Club when her parents Bev and Steve Palaamo were running the Bistro and Restaurant pre-EQ. Unsure of what she wanted to do when she left school Emma decided to attend university where she earned a degree in English and Psychology. “I’ve wondered if I’d ever use my degree, but I love being in the kitchen. Cooking’s in my blood. It’s what I’m used to,” said Emma. Largely trained by her father, Emma said she was nervous when she was initially offered running the Bistro. “My parents have such a good reputation and I don’t want to let Dad down. The reaction to my menu and cooking has been great, and regular members are very happy to see me back.” With her first few weeks spent gauging what diners wanted, Emma is confident she has streamlined the menu to provide a selection to satisfy everyone. “I’ve listened to what they want and have taken heed. by bringing back the old with new. I’m also doing blackboard specials and two course specials, as well as introducing a Kids’ menu.” The Club Bistro is open Wednesday to Sunday for Brunch, Lunch and Dinner and is also available for private functions. The Richmond Club, 75 London St, phone 389 5778. www.rwmc.co.nz
